On a day known for love and with her earthly family by her side, she joined her husband, Michael, and daughter, Michele, who preceded her in death. We will miss her dearly, but know that her amazing capacity for love will always be a part of our family and each one of us.
Doris was born in Kansas, one of seven daughters, to John “Elmer” Hollister and Beulah Hazel Funk. She graduated from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in South Bend, Indiana, and spent her career caring for patients from Indiana to New Mexico to Michigan and finally Colorado where she settled with her family.
She loved being a nurse and especially delivering babies. There never was a baby who didn’t love to be held by Grammy D!
Doris married Michael Nyikos and had four children, Michele, Chris, Steve and Maureen. They settled in Colorado and when Mike passed away, Doris moved to the Denver area to be closer to her children.
She enjoyed the Broncos (when they were winning), reading, gambling and spending time with her seven grandchildren - Stacey, Kristen, Robert, Erin, Sara, Andy and Liam. She also loved seeing her many great grandchildren as well as her nieces and nephews, many of whom are near the Denver area.
A celebration of life will be held for Doris, in Denver later this spring. We will notify friends and family as details become available.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Epilepsy Foundation or the charity of your choice.
