Floyd, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024, surrounded by his family at the age of 79. Known for his optimism and extraordinary capacity for love, Floyd positively impacted countless lives with his genuine kindness and unwavering support.
Born January 12, 1945, Floyd grew up with a passion for sports and a competitive spirit that would serve him well throughout his life. He attended the University of Colorado, Boulder where he excelled on the track and field team and earned a Bachelor of Science (1967) as well as a Master of Science (1969) in Physical Education. Subsequently, he earned a Master of Arts in Education Administration (1978) from the University of Northern Colorado.
Floyd was a decorated competitive distance runner and race walker. He competed for the 1968 Olympic Trials in the marathon, held the Colorado high altitude marathon record which persisted for over a decade, was on the 1973 World Cup team, and competed in the 50km race walk at the 1976 World Championships in Athletics (an event hosted by the IAAF after the 50km race walk was regrettably dropped by the IOC from the 1976 Olympics), but it was his pure love for the sport that truly motivated him and he shared that passion with the youth that he coached.
Floyd's dedication to education and coaching youth was evident in his long and fulfilling career as a teacher and coach. He taught for more than three decades at Louisville Middle School and also held prior positions at Louisville Elementary and Emerald Elementary. Floyd always saw the best in his students and possessed a unique ability to inspire and motivate them. As a coach, he instilled the importance of effort, perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship in his athletes. His impact on countless young lives is immeasurable.
Beyond the gym and the track, Floyd was a devoted family man. Married to his loving wife Beth for nearly 49 years, they shared a beautiful partnership built on love, laughter, and a shared passion for card games. Together, they created a warm and nurturing home for their five children, Kimberlee, Kelli, Karrie, Caroline, and Marcus.
Floyd was a man of profound faith, and he drew solace and strength from his relationship with God. His unwavering belief in human potential was a cornerstone of his life. He was also an avid baseball fan, enjoyed spending time outdoors in the mountains, and he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Floyd is survived by his beloved wife Beth; his five children (Kimberlee, Kelli, Karrie, Caroline, Marcus) and their spouses (Kha, Tom, Jon, Zach); six grandchildren (Sophia, Arianna, Thomas, Lucy, Clara, Madi); and numerous cherished friends and colleagues. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
