Gerald Evans

Gerald L. Evans (Jerry) passed on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at age 85 following a stroke. He is survived by his wife, Joan Biek Evans; his daughter, Georgia Evans of Loveland; his son, John Evans of Ocala, Florida; five granddaughters, Katie, Jenny, Amanda, and Christiana Evans of Dallas, Texas as well as five great-grandchildren and also Joan’s daughter, Christilyn Biek Larson & husband Steve Larson; granddaughter, Regan Greeff and Joan’s son, David Biek & wife Christine Cowles and their children Sydney and Nathanial, all of Boulder.

Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Dale; his parents and his beloved first wife of 45 years, Mary Ann Evans.

Jerry was appreciated, respected and loved by his family, many friends, and members of the First United Methodist Church of Boulder (FUMC) and the Rocky Mountain Spiritual Fellowship (RMSF). He much liked to play tennis, hike, dance, bike, camp, travel, and have good conversations with the X-Pats group. He had a true adventurous spirit.

Jerry had a very successful career following his degree from CU in 1951 In Engineering Physics. He worked at Los Alamos Lab, designing radiation monitoring and detection devices, and then at Hughes aircraft in California where he was a Department Manager while developing a high frequency digital communication system for the Air Force. Later, seven engineers of his team followed him to Dallas where he became a Director for a Digital Communication Project with LTV. He then later returned to Hughes Space and Communications Laboratory working on the electronic probe for the Jupiter Space Mission, which after the two year flight to Jupiter, proved to be successful.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm Sunday, September 23rd at Boulder First United Methodist Church, 1421 Spruce Street. Parking is on 15th and Pine Street.
