John was born in Great Bend, Kansas to Oscar Carl Ostenberg and Elise Marie (Carlson) Ostenberg on December 20, 1940. He was preceded by his parents in February and May 1970. He was also preceded by his son John Kurtis in December 1983. He is survived by his wife Diane of 50 plus years and daughter Jill and husband Greg Nichols of Lenexa, Kansas and grandchildren Lindsey, John Kurtis "Jake" and Kara Nichols.
