Marian Underwood (93) of Boulder, Colorado and formerly of Cape Coral, Florida passed away on Monday December 17, 2018, during rehab for a fractured hip. She was born on Wednesday May 13, 1925, to Leonard and Gertrude (Hill) Larson of Chicago, IL. Her mother died on Christmas Eve when Marian was 10 years old, but Marian enjoyed growing up with her father in a large extended family with ‘double’ cousin Barbara, and a host of aunts uncles. Her father later married Laura Cleve while Marian was in high school. Marian graduated from Kelvyn Park High School and entered Lutheran Deaconess Nursing School. Next, she went to New York University to complete a bachelor’s degree in Public Health Nursing. She worked as a public health nurse in Englewood and Skokie townships of Illinois. She met George Underwood and they were married in 1952. They raised their family in Skokie, IL and moved to Florida in 1977 after facing too many harsh winters. After 49 years of marriage, George passed away in 2001. Eight years later, Marian married Adam Borek of Cape Coral, FL (originally from Long Island, NY). Adam passed away in 2014. She moved to Boulder, Colorado in July 2018 to be closer to family. Marian was fortunate to have many friends from both Chicago and Cape Coral.
Marian is survived by her four children Paul Underwood (Alice), Carol Billings (Ted), Joan Manly (Keith), and Cheryl Pelton (Stan), six grandchildren Jeffrey Underwood, Phillip Young, Laura Arnold, Sarah Wilder, Allison Manly, and Jonathan Manly; five great-grandchildren, and many relatives from the Hill, Larson, and Trendler families.
Marian has been described as kindness and patience – sweetness itself. She lived a life of service to others in addition to a full career of public health nursing: a 35-year volunteer at Cape Coral Hospital, 30-gallon blood donor, Girl Scout leader, drum & bugle corps chaperone, and she was involved the church women’s group wherever she attended. She never complained or spoke poorly of others. She loved the outdoors: camping, hiking, gardening and going to the beach to watch the sunset.
A celebration of life service is planned for Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Boulder, 1421 Spruce St., Boulder, CO 80302. In lieu of flowers memorials may be offered in Marian’s name to a charity of your choosing.
