Marilyn Fisher of Boulder, CO passed away from congestive heart failure on April 10, 2024. She is survived by her daughter Cathy White of Ft. Collins CO, her son George Fisher of Oakland CA, and grandsons Christopher Weixelman of Ft. Collins CO, and James Weixelman of Longmont CO.
Marilyn Fisher was born on November 8, 1931 in Bartlesville, OK to Leon H. Moore and Nancy Hewitt Moore. After attending public schools in Bartlesville, she first attended the local Bartlesville junior college. While participating in a school play there, she met her future husband, Dave Fisher. She then attended the Chevy Chase Institute in Maryland, and then the University of Colorado, earning a BA in English. She and Dave were married on June 8th 1953, right after she graduated.
In the first years of their marriage, Marilyn and Dave lived in several different locations in the Rocky Mountain region, owing to Dave’s job as a petroleum geologist. In 1954 their son George was born in Billings, MT, and in 1957 their daughter Cathy was born in Denver. In 1965, they moved to Boulder CO, a city they had learned to love while studying at CU. Marilyn and Dave bought an old house on Pine Street, which became their home for the next 44 years. Marilyn, Dave and their family built a cabin in the Conifer Hill area near Raymond CO, which became their summer weekend retreat.
In the early 1960s, Marilyn joined the Baha’i Faith. She was inspired by the Faith’s optimistic vision of the unity of the Earth’s many peoples and religions. She remained an active member of the Faith throughout her life and served on the local governing body until her death.
All during her years in Boulder Marilyn loved to go exploring down the side roads in the mountains. She would take off for several days at a time, with a map and spend the days exploring back roads to new places.
From the late 1960s through the 1980s, Marilyn helped found and support a Baha’i summer school at Conifer Hill. It was challenging work, run on a shoe-string budget in primitive conditions, and done while she and her family were also building their cabin near there.
After her grandchildren were born, Marilyn and Dave loved spending time with them. As Grandma and Grandpa, they were a major influence and source of comfort and love to them. As the grandchildren got older, Marilyn and Dave began traveling, taking a series of spring-time road trips all around the southwest, flying to Hawaii to visit their son George when he lived there, and later on taking trips to Spain and China.
In 2009, Marilyn and Dave decided to sell their home and moved to the Frasier Meadows Retirement Community. Marilyn and Dave lived happily at Frasier until Dave passed away in 2013. Marilyn continued living in the same apartment until shortly before she passed away in 2024.
In her last years, Marilyn was challenged by health issues, that she faced creatively and cheerfully. Everyone at Frasier marveled at Marilyn’s navigational skills with her electric wheelchair. She was an enthusiastic participant at the “Community Table” in the Frasier Dining Room. She pursued a highly engaged life, right up to the end.
A memorial service will be held in the Hilltop Lounge at Frasier Meadows Retirement Community on Friday May 17 from 1pm-3pm. Flowers and cards may be sent to Hilltop Lounge, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder, CO 80303.
