Mary Jean Martin was 95 years old and born in Prairie View, Kansas to James Russell and Dolly Page. She graduated from Kansas State College at Ft. Hays, Kansas, with a bachelor’s degree. Mary Jean met her husband, James N. Martin while there during World War II.
The family moved to Boulder in 1953, where Jim got a job as a pharmacist. When their children were all in school, Mary Jean went to CU to take courses to get a Colorado teaching certificate. She taught kindergarten for twenty-two years in the Boulder Valley Schools. After retirement, she operated a small day care in their home.
She always enjoyed sewing. After retirement, she audited classes at CU. She also traveled extensively until health problems kept her at home.
Her husband Jim, preceded her in death, but Mary Jean is survived by her brother James Russell Page Jr. of Crystal River, FL, three daughters, Gloria Gay Martin of Denver, Nancy Jean Birkenheuer of Lakewood, and Sarah Lee Place of Mt. Vernon, WA, three grandchildren, two great grandsons, one great granddaughter.
A private graveside service will be held at Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Senior Center of Boulder.
