Richard Tupper Rice passed away from cancer on December 4, 2014.
He was born and raised in Washington DC and attended Sidwell Friends School from 1st through 12th grades. He graduated from Earlham College and earned his Master’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania where he studied with Louis I. Kahn. Richard spent 2 years in India as part of the Peace Corps, worked as an architect in Philadelphia and studied Tibetan Buddhism at Karma Choling in Barnet, Vermont. He moved to Colorado in 1978 and to Boulder, Colorado in 1979 where he worked on architectural projects in Boulder as well as in Telluride. He continued his Buddhist practice under Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. He served as Architectural Adviser to Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and was very involved in the Master Plan for the building development at the Shambhala Mountain Center, Colorado.
Richard married Katherine Champlin in 2001. Their two beautiful daughters were born in 2005. Richard was incredibly devoted to his family. He loved golf, cribbage and playing the didgeridoo. He leaves behind many close friends.
He is survived by his wife Katherine Champlin Rice, daughters Amelia and Eloise Rice, brother Robert Rice. He is preceded in death by his parents Hollis Essex Rice and Edwin Rice.
A Sukhavati ceremony will be conducted in Richard’s honor at the Boulder Shambhala Center, 1345 Spruce Street, Boulder on Saturday, December 6 at 3:00 pm. All are invited. Arrangements are being handled by Crist Mortuary.
