With great sadness and heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of loving father and husband Thomas (Tom) Berry of Bradenton, FL at age 87. Tom passed away on Feb. 1. He was born in Detroit, MI on Feb. 27, 1937 and was raised and lived in Dearborn, MI as well as Westland and West Bloomfield.
Tom worked for 35 years at Ford Motor Company beginning his career there after four years of service in the U.S. Army. Tom started in the mailroom at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, then worked his way up to being a computer systems analyst which he did for the majority of his career before retiring. After he left Ford, Tom continued to work including as a manager at Langan’s Norwest Lanes in Farmington Hills and Meijer’s.
Tom had a strong work ethic and was a friend to all. Those who knew him would say he would “give you the shirt off of his back.” He was a big Detroit sports fan and was very passionate about the Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons. He especially enjoyed following University of Michigan sports teams and was a dedicated Wolverines football fan. His leisurely passions included bowling and playing softball with his co-workers from Ford. Tom also loved dogs especially Yorkies and enjoyed swimming pools, beaches and barbecues.
He is survived by his three children, Jon Berry, Derek Berry and Dyan Sweany and his youngest sibling and only sister, Violet Blaise. Tom has five grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. He was particularly close to his older brother Clyde’s family, including his nephews Steve, David and Mike and his nieces Karen and Susie. His brothers Clyde, Fred and David are all deceased as are his parents, Fred and Violet.
There will be a celebration of life service for Tom in Michigan this summer with family and friends.
