William R. Shaulis, Retired Chief Petty Officer of the United States Coast Guard, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service, humor, and unwavering love. Known affectionately as “Grumpy” to all who knew him, William was a kind and gentle giant whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and a steady dose of dad jokes.
William served his country with honor and pride, dedicating his career to the Coast Guard and embodying the values of duty, resilience, and quiet leadership. After retirement, he continued to embrace life at sea as an avid cruiser, finding joy and peace on the open water — a place where he felt most free.
He is survived by his brother, Gene Shaulis of Casper, Wyoming, and by his three daughters: Lynda Shaulis Lewis of Anchorage, Alaska; Kathy Shaulis of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Mary Le of Jefferson GA
William was a proud grandfather to Josh Barber of Haverhill, Massachusetts; Mae Lewis of Anchorage, Alaska; Jordan Hoang of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Patrick McManus and Sean McManus of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Justin Le and Jackson Le of Jefferson, Georgia; and Jacklyn Le of Bradenton, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, William B. Shaulis, and his grandson, SSG Keith F. Lewis, whose memories he carried close to his heart.
William will be remembered for his strength, his humor, and the way he made life brighter for those around him. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the love he gave, and the lives he shaped. Fair winds and following seas, Chief — you are deeply missed.
