Joseph was born in Franklin, New Jersey on December 6, 1949 to the late David Hughes and Anna (Dubel) Hughes. After graduating high school, Joseph enlisted in the US Navy in the fall of 1969. Upon his honorable discharge from the military Joseph began working for the New Jersey Department of Transportation where he dedicated over 35 years, retiring at age 62 as a Supervisor. Joseph was also passionate about his work as a volunteer firefighter for Franklin Borough for 25 years, where he served as Fire Chief for two years during that time.
In his spare time Joseph enjoyed coaching Little League, fishing, golfing, gardening, and going to the beach. He was an avid NASCAR fan, attending the racing series every year for over 20 years. Above all, Joseph loved spending quality time with his adoring grandchildren.
Joseph leaves fond memories to his beloved wife of 53 years, Maureen Hughes; his son Shawn Hughes and wife Tanya; his son Michael Hughes and companion April; his grandchildren Amanda & Tim Reda and Matthew Hughes; his sister Patricia Kresge and husband Greg; his brother Charles Hughes and wife Marie; his mother Anna Hughes; his cousin Richard Franek; his sister-in-law Kathleen Bednar; many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, and countless dear friends.
A Memorial Visitation for Joseph will take place on Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main St, Branchville, NJ 07826, with a Memorial Prayer Service at 1:30 p.m. officiated by Fr. Philip-Michael F. Tangorra.
