Marilyn Louise Emmans, 77, slipped from this life on May 21, 2026 in New York City where she was being treated after a long illness. Born October 22, 1948, she grew up in Branchville, NJ. She later lived in Washington, DC after graduate school, eventually settling in Laurel, Maryland.
Marilyn led a life marked by intellectual achievement, professional dedication, and adventures that challenged her.
Marilyn went to Branchville Elementary School and Newton High School. She earned her undergraduate degree summa cum laude, from Cedar Crest College before pursuing further studies at the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science and Art, where she graduated with a degree in Mathematics in 1971. This education gave her the foundation for a unique career in the defense contracting industry, eventually working on stealth projects.
After completing graduate school, Marilyn began her professional career at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). She later joined Litton Industries before continuing her work as an analyst on military projects with Northrop Grumman for the past 23 years (recently retired). Her contributions to these companies were substantial and critical to defense initiatives. She was recognized for her skill in overcoming engineering issues on projects with the military clients of Northrop Grumman.
Outside of her professional life, Marilyn embraced the outdoors. An Advanced Open Water Diver, she also enjoyed skiing, mountaineering, hiking, and biking—activities that pushed her and satisfied her love of nature. Marilyn especially enjoyed time with her family: at the beach; hiking the Appalachian trail; boating at the lake; any and all holidays…
Marilyn is survived by her brother, R. Bruce Emmans and his wife, Judy, of Branchville NJ; her sister, Kathleen Emmans and nephew, Robert Keane Emmans of Monkton, MD.; her nephew, David Hunscher and family of Gladstone, NJ; her niece, Brittany McGill, of Bangor, ME.; and her aunt, Arline (Emmans) Wilson of CT. She leaves a partner, Bob Lawson. She was predeceased by her sister, Martha Hunscher; her father, Robert S. Emmans; and mother, Marion Brooks.
Marilyn’s legacy is one of intellect, determination, and demand for a full life with family and professional rewards. We loved her, will miss her and remember her fondly and well.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 and from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main St, Branchville, NJ. Graveside Services will follow at 11 am on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 in Branchville Cemetery, Pines Rd, Branchville, NJ.
