Alta was born in Tacoma WA to Theodoshia Felicia-Anne Hale and John Wesley Everett Ledbetter on May 8, 1920. She attended Lincoln High School, Tacoma WA, and graduated in 1938. She worked as a cosmetologist and hair dresser after high school, and as a homemaker for most of her adult life. While raising 3 active daughters, she was involved in Mercer Island WA and Naperville IL local community organizations and activities. She and her husband enjoyed participating in their neighborhood community club and gourmet club. She also enjoyed gardening wherever she lived, especially her roses. Alta was always a creative soul who loved observing people, and as a child of the Great Depression, could always find a frugal way to solve most any problem, from basic household plumbing to making her daughters' bridesmaid dresses. In her later life in San Jose and Brentwood CA she became a dedicated and talented oil painter who especially enjoyed portraiture. She and her husband enjoyed travelling worldwide. She attended artist workshops and academies in the U.S., France and Italy. As a member of several art leagues, she won numerous awards for her work.
