Part 2 of 2

She looked over, smirked, and rolled her eyes. She thought about what she was going to say for a little bit and then decided to speak. She looked back over and said “Shawn, all of my children... were a blessing”. 

Although I was expecting a witty response, she went on to explain why. She talked about how in each phase of their lives brought joy into her heart. She talked about watching them grow up and how they played sports. She talked about watching Aunt Kelly teach the grandkids how to swim in the pool. In her explanation, she expanded into her grandchildren. She talked about how proud she was of Amanda, Steven, and Lianne. She talked about all the great things Heather and April have done. She talked about Dakota and hoped that he was doing well.

You see, for those of you that had the opportunity of knowing Patricia know that she did what she has always done. She spoke true to the heart and kind words onto others. She reminds us that it’s the good times/memories that’ll stick with us until the very end.

We might have lost one heck of a woman down here on earth, but heaven has gained a member on its All Star team.

Until we all meet again Grandma, rest easy.

Part 1 of 2

I wanted to share one of my last memories of Grandma and one of our last heart-to-heart conversations this last January. I remember standing next to her bedside and I wanted to know what was on her mind. I wanted to hear her voice and let her memory steer the conversation in whichever way she’d like.

She started off by telling me about her husband and how they met on a blind date. She recalled what she wore the night they met, how he asked her dad if he can have her hand in marriage, and how she laughed at him when he asked her while they were driving down the road. She talked about their wedding night and how they stopped off at a hotel because the fog was too thick to drive in. How he went to the store and bought a six pack of beer and they spent the night sitting by each other’s side having a few. She mentioned the first time she knew that she loved him because of the simplicity in his actions. He was just as simple as she was.

As we were taking a trip down memory lane mixed with joy, love, and laughter, I decided to sneak in a question. My question went like this: “Alright grandma, which one of your children gave you the most trouble growing up?”

To Russ, April & Heather, Dakota and Hunter, and all of the Toomer family,

Jennifer and I send along our deepest condolences at the passing of your beloved mother and grandmother.  It was so wonderful to meet you in person at the family reunion last year, I wish I could have gotten to Northern CA to meet your mom before she passed.  She sounded like a wonderful lady.  I hope you reflect on the happy times of her life, the wonderful impact she had on those around her, and know she is now at peace with family and loved ones.  I've enclosed the photo of Pat with her brothers and parents, her Grandma Jenny Ryan, and her Aunt Sis (Winnie) that we showed at the reunion last summer.
