
Elizabeth Stone Walker passed away peacefully, last Thursday morning on the 8th of November at the Health Center at West Meade Place. Born on the 18th of May in 1918, she was the first born of Joseph Bryan and Clarice Bufford Stone of Stewart County, Tennessee. She was educated in Nashville public schools and Hume Fogg High School.
Elizabeth was best known throughout the state and petroleum industry for her leadership of Tennessee Oil Men's Association. In 1956, she was named Executive Secretary of TOMA, becoming the first woman to head a trade association in Tennessee.
During her thirty year career with TOMA she achieved many firsts, among them -the first woman to head the Tennessee Society of Association Executives,the first female executive of a state petroleum marketers association, the first woman to head the American Organization of National Oil Jobbers, and the first female registered lobbyist in Tennessee. Through her efficiency and expertise she achieved respect and recognition, truly a forerunner blazing a path for women to follow.
Elizabeth is survived by two daughters: Jeanne W. Poole & her husband Ed, Columbus, GA., Nancy W. Newton, Brunswick, GA.,seven grandchildren: Ed Poole III & wife Lynn, Tampa, FL, Cissie P. Sullivan & husband Michael, Aiken, S.C. Bryan Poole, Athens, GA., Joe Allen Newton, Valdosta, GA.,Bert W. Newton & wife Gloria, Pasadena, CA.,Andrew Newton & wife Karen, Falls Church, VA.,John Mark Newton, Athens, GA. and three great-grandchildren: Caroline Poole, Ella and Elias Newton.
She was a longtime active member of First Baptist Church and its Good News Bible Class.
Services will be held at ten o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 13th of November in the rotunda, at the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery , located on McCrory Lane and will be conducted by Kristin Clark-Banks associate minister, Belle Meade United Methodist Church. Reception at the church will follow. An opportunity for memorial gifts will be provided in the coming spring.
For devoted, happy and loving care of their Mama Lib, the family wishes to acknowledge Renee Halaska, LeAnn Bauer, Mary Pope and LuAnn Gilpin all of whom made possible and brightened her last months.
