John Wellington McMahan Sr.

Dr. John W. McMahan Sr., 84, of Brentwood, TN, passed from this life into heavenly rest surrounded by his family on September 20, 2023 after a degenerative illness. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Lynne McMahan, son John W. McMahan Jr., granddaughter Emily Caroline McMahan, and a host of other cherished family members. He is predeceased by his parents Isaac Calvert (I.C.) McMahan and Clema Hunter McMahan.

John was born on September 1st, 1939 in Gallatin, TN. John graduated high school from Battle Ground Academy in 1957, and then attended Vanderbilt University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, graduating in 1961. He then went to Vanderbilt University Medical School where he completed his medical degree, internship, and residency, specializing in Ophthalmology. He had a rewarding career as a doctor and surgeon, with offices in Nashville, TN and Gallatin, TN. John also worked for many years with his father in the business of breeding, training, and racing thoroughbred horses at various locations around the country. John grew up on the family horse farm in Gallatin, TN and then lived the remainder of his life after medical school in Nashville, TN and later Brentwood, TN.

John’s hobbies and passions over the course of life included golf (once achieving a hole-in-one), playing poker with his friends, horse racing, real estate investing, sporting events, traveling, history, swimming, exercise, and socializing at Richland Country Club with his family and his many friends.

Visitation will be held at 1:00PM, Sunday, September 24th with a service to follow at 2:30PM, at Brentwood Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, 9010 Church St. E., Brentwood, TN. A private burial for family will be at 11:00AM on Monday, September 25th, at Crestview Memory Gardens in Gallatin, TN.
