Nellie C. Johnston

JOHNSTON, Nellie C., age 101 of Spring Hill, Florida, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2021, at her home. Mrs. Johnston was born November 2, 1920, in Slocomb, Alabama to Byron and Ethel Smith and moved to Brooksville 50 years ago from Lakeland, Florida.  She was a homemaker and was a life member and served for almost 50 years as Post Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Women’s Auxiliary, Lakeland, Florida and she was Protestant by faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Zell Johnston, sons, Teddy L. Johnston & Fred Z. Johnston and sisters, Mildred Merritt & Sarah Hayes.

Survivors include her son:  George Allen Hayes of Spring Hill, Florida; sisters:  Jean Sheiver of Columbus, Ohio and Lee Waters of Pensacola, Florida; grandchildren:  Teddy and Debbie Johnston, as well as many great grandchildren.

Visitation for friends will be 9 – 11am, Monday, November 22, 2021, at the Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville Chapel where funeral services will begin at 11:00am with Pastor Greg Freeze officiating.  Interment will follow at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
