Mr Knapp sad to hear you are gone .You were my Art teacher 6th - 8th grade when my dad was stationed at RAF Lakenheath England. You were my favorite teacher out of all the teachers I ever had.You were the reason I loved art so much and I learned such a variety of art that's what made it so much fun.I wished I found you sooner you were my favorite and an amazing teacher.You would play the old radio shows as we would draw still life.Thank you for everything you taught us.

Barry lived life to the fullest and generously left much of himself with us -marking every student he taught all over the world, every friend he shared life with, every artist he connected to. His life was full of creativity--making his own whimsical art, inspiring others to live creatively and simply being fun to be with.  I will miss my Mud Bud!  I will miss your laugh and the ever present smile on your face...

I think it's so fitting that in lieu of flowers we have the option to donate to the arts in honor of my Uncle Barry. That is exactly what I think of when he comes to mind! A huge portion of my childhood involves the Knapps, and one of my favorite things was when Aunt Carolyn would let us paint bowls with her, or when Uncle Barry would let us use some of his clay to make things with him in his studio.  Poor Georgia was probably tired of it but I looked forward to it every time.
In college and after college I got into ceramics again, and it was fun to touch base with Uncle Barry to show him what I'd made. One of my professors even knew his name when I mentioned I had an uncle who was a potter! I have at least a few pieces in my house that he gave me and my siblings over the years, and I love having them. Uncle Barry was so kind, generous, fun, and funny. I wish I could have been closer to all of my family through the years and now through this, and I am so sorry to not be there for the ceremony. Georgia and Aunt Carolyn, I love you both, and please know I would be there in a heartbeat if I could right now! I'm sure Dad/Wick is a good substitute for us ;) All the best and God bless, Holly

Barry was one of the easiest people to get to know I have ever met.  He was exactly as he presented himself- creative, intelligent, funny, kind, generous, thoughtful, and incredibly talented, but so low key that it was almost as if he didn't know it.  What a super person, and I am honored that I got to know him though much less than I had hoped for.  Georgia and Cary, you were blessed to be his family-- I know he will always be with you.  Much love and hopes for healing.

The world is made better by people like Mr. Knapp. When his candle burned out,  everything dimmed. But the flicker, sparkle, and gentle flame that was his burns bright in those who knew and loved him. He was Art, Art was Him, and Art never dies.

What beautiful tributes for this very special man. He obviously touched many students lives in very positive and meaningful ways. He has left a beautiful legacy of art and creativity in them all over the world. Cary and Georgia, I am so sorry.

Mr. Knapp was my all time favorite art teacher in all my years of school. I had the privelage to have him as my art teacher in Keflavik, Iceland at AT Mahan HS. 
He always kept in touch with me and was such a motivator when I became very ill. He showed such compassion and concern for my recovery. 
Mr. Knapp will always be kept close to my heart. He always made sure I stayed positive during my most difficult days of my illness. 
He was and always will be an inspiration to me in finding my passion for art. You will be missed I am sure by many. May you rest in peace and have eternal life. My family and I will have you and your family in our prayers.

Dear Cary and Georgia,  I want you to know that I am so sorry for your loss. I remember the passion Barry had for his art and his pride in Georgia. I met Barry almost 30 years ago when he and Cary were stationed at Lakenheath. Barry possessed a world-wise appreciation of all things creative and this passion exuded from him in his own work and in his energy in coaxing it from others. Thank you for posting this. I will miss your Dad more than you know. I am still waking up in the morning to see what he has emailed or texted. He was so encouraging and supportive and kept me going so many times when I was ready quit. He truly loved art and was my number one fan. I don't know what I will do without him in my life. I know your mother is completely lost. I never saw a couple more devoted to each other.

I am so shocked. I was recently driving by on the I-95, and I nearly drove to see him to reminisce and to thank him for all his support. He was my mentor in Cuba when we were both selling photo note cards - he was such a kind, generous man as well as an extremely talented man. I will cherish my christmas ornaments always. My condolences to you at this very sad time.

Barry was a very special person and a delightful free spirit. His art reflected his unique persona. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Barry ("George") was a great guy, a great artist and a unique spirit.

I'm sorry for your lost but I must say he was a great man person human an any other things we can think of i met him 15 years ago an to make a long story short iam a better person today he kept so many people in the right direction no matter what you look like or where you come from ..I still have things I made for my parents with him in my moms house so he will always be great memory in lots of families homes have a bless day an i wish you the best

He will never be forgotten. I can hear his last words to me about my daughter and I when he said " Just look at you both with beautiful smiles, I know who's your favorite!! He was an amazing man and teacher. He taught me art in Keflavik. I've told my kids all about him. My heart just sank. May he RIP and my thoughts are with you all.

My heart is heavy this morning. The world has lost a great man. One who changed so many perspectives-taught us to SEE LIFE DIFFERENTLY, taught us ACCEPTANCE and taught us to believe that WE CAN ACHIEVE.
He has kept us all so close to our early roots, and it has been 30 years for me personally having his constant little input, a reminder for me to see the world differently.

This is truly sad news. As we go through life there are only a few people that stand out. Mr. Knapp is one of them. He captivated us with his mugs, drawings and art that was a style of his own. I would recognize it anywhere. His class was one I always looked forward to. Watching Lord of the Rings cartoon while working on your project was an annual treat. My thoughts are with the Knapp family as we celebrate his life and morn his passing. Rest in peace Mr. Knapp.

I so enjoyed spending creative time with Barry in GTMO.  He was my mentor and helped me start a small business on GTMO.  Rather than considering me as "competition" , he taught me the elements of marketing my work, and welcomed me to display my work next to his.  I had always hoped to visit him at his studio, but missed my chance only recently when I passed by the motorway exit.; how I wish I had made it there. But my happy memories of him and my awe of his talent will always be with me.  I recently bought three of his glass ornaments; I will cherish them.  His spirit of creativity and of generosity and positivity inspired his students.  In meeting other colleagues who know Barry from his other schools, everyone had only great compliments to say about him.  And, above all, he and Georgia ( who was just a little girl in GTMO  were such a great pair, a wonderful addition to our GTMO community. I was seven when tragedy stuck our family. My childhood changed drastically from that moment on.

My father was a military man and we moved often. I was a shy white kid in LA Public when we moved to Iceland. I was a withdrawn geek before it was popular to be one.

I saw my reflection in the mirror and was never impressed. There was nothing that made me stand out from anyone around. Nothing special. No talents or gifts to be proud of...

Then I attended a Junior High art class and the teacher noticed I had a meager ability to draw. He taught me some skills and encouraged me to improve. Under his tutelage I did learn a lot. In fact, when a contest came up I was excited to enter my work. I won and got flown to England to meet hundreds of young artists from all over the world.

I did not become an artist. But this teacher awakened a passion for creativity in me that I never knew existed. I began to blossom in its light. In my darkest of times, and I've had plenty, this passion transformed into writing. And writing well, you know....

My old art teacher has long since retired but we connected a while back via Facebook and he has been a great encouragement to my writing career.

Needless to say there is a special place in my heart for this guy. So my heart sunk in my chest when I heard he passed away yesterday.

The colors of this world are just a shade darker for me today.

Some people only live for themselves. That was not the case for this man. His canvas was the people around him, and I count myself lucky to have been one.

I like what I see in the mirror these days.

Good work, Barry Knapp.

Mr. Knapp was an awesome teacher and made a lasting impression on so many students from so many places.  His teaching style is one I try to emulate in my own classroom.  Prayers to you, the family, as you mourn your loss and move forward.  May God's hand rest upon you and His blessings surround you.

I did not know Mr. Knapp at all, but the comments that I've seen on the AT Mahan facebook pages from the kids that had him there in Iceland, I know he had to be a wonderful person. Bless, Mr. Knapp.

Barry was the ultimate example of a good teacher. He was caring, positive and inspirational - an example to us all. He is revered by his students years after he retired. This says it all.

My heart goes out to Cary, Georgia and the rest of Barry's family. I know Barry has made such a difference in so many peoples lives as a teacher, an artist and as a friend. I will always cherish the memories I have of him and be happy that I knew him for the short time that I did... He is one of the nicest, most generous and most talented artists and people I have ever met. I will always remember The first time I met him during one of my vacations to Jekyll island when Debbie invited me to join her and some friends at CJs on SSI.  Joining him, Cary, Dennis, and Debbie for dinner at CJ's on many Thursday nights and listening to him and Dennis talk pottery and haiku while Debbie, Cary and I talked work and random other things after I had moved there His meeting me with his truck so I could load the bike I had bought from Paul in it to get it to my apartment on St. SimonsHelping him fix his Wi-Fi printing and answering his IPad questions... Going to the Ritz on first Friday in Brunswick for his and Cary's art exhibit and him explaining patiently the techniques he used to create his 3D bowls and other art His commissioning a piece of art from me on a payment plan so I could afford it and taking an idea and a sketch I gave him and turning it into a beautiful 3D work of art The willingness of him to listen to ideas of other pieces I had in mind and offer to create those when I could afford them The cute and quirky wind chime I commissioned for my mom telling him I wanted a variety of different birds on it and getting a wonderful work of art with blue, red, and many colored birds in such a variety that it included a chicken. That was just Barry and how his mind worked and I loved him for it The generosity of his and Cary inviting me, practically a stranger to stay at their house my first night in SSI while I waited to meet my new landlord the next day about my apartment there being included in random Saturday and Sunday dinners at their house and chatting with him about random stuff like raccoons and alligators  Having him, Cary, Debbie and Dennis over for dinners at my apartment Going to second Sunday with them and enjoying live music and cheap food for a good cause with Lois. Seeing him at different art exhibits around the island where he and Cary had work displayed or a booth setup Giving him a ride home after CJs on the nights Cary had to work because I drove past his house on my way home and waiting to make sure he made it up the stairs before driving off I will truly miss this guy and am so sad I will not be able to see and talk to him on my visits to SSI.  I am very proud to be able to say Barry Knapp was my friend.

I have known Barry and Cary for 35 years, since our days in Keflavik in the early 80's. Barry was pretty laid back, always happy and smiling. I don' ever remember a time I saw him really angry. He loved his family, his art, animals, and his students. He took such an interest in all of his students; he was the kind of teacher who leaves a lifetime impression. I remember how happy he was when he and Cary were expecting Georgia and how devoted he was to them. in these last years, I have so enjoyed "chatting" with him on Facebook...sharing his art and his travels...I will miss his witty comments and his presence. The world has lost a great one...RIP, Barry.

Barry has been a presence in my life, and in Maureen's, for decades. Amicable. intelligent, creative, he will be missed by everyone who knew him, or who knew Cary.

My heart goes out to you both Cary and Georgia.  While I did not know Barry well, what I knew was that he was gentle and kind and a really good person.  I am so sorry for your loss.  If I can do anything to help you I am here.

Well first off, I don't think our cat would be alive if it weren't for Barry. I have to laugh when I think of the countless times that we would be driving away for vacation and I would call Barry in a panic because we forgot to make arrangements for the cat. He'd just chuckle and say that he was on it because he saw us packing. What great neighbors!  And of course I think of Barry every time I walk on the beach here in Florida because I am always on the lookout for the perfect shells for his Christmas ornaments. I enjoy that so much, it gives my walks purpose. Next time we're in the Keys we'll set adrift a little raft of seashells for him.

I loved Barry's art and his sense of what was true. For me, you two were the dynamic duo.  Cary, my thoughts are with you and your family.

Cary, I am so sorry to hear about your husband.  You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this tough time.

I only met Barry a couple of times when visiting with my dad, but he was so friendly and approachable that he was hard to forget.  He showed off his work with such joy and passion it was energizing just to speak with him.  We still have two pieces of his pottery that have been used every day for 20 years, and when I see them I sometimes think how wonderful it is to do what you love, as he did.  My sincere condolences to those who were closest to this warm and generous soul.

Sonia, Neil and I have known Barry and Cary for almost 30 years.  Barry was always so cheerful and full of activity, he loved his art and loved walking the dog.  From our early encounters in Brandon England, Barry would don his cap and take the dog for long walks in the woods, providing inspiration for his art.  Cary worked with me at RAF Lakenheath as the librarian, both Sonia and I remember the day Georgia was born. Our deepest condolences to Cary, Georgia and the rest of his family, we will truly miss him.

Mr. Knapp was one of the few teachers in my educational years who really made a difference in my life. I think my two strongest memories were of the book the class made "101 Ways to Use a Stuffed Puffin" and the large mural the class made for the hallway. I hear it might be in Kansas in a DODDS museum, I hope it is as it was an amazing task he set for us ... and we did not disappoint. I am so very thankful to have reconnected through Facebook. I will deeply miss him.
