

Dr. Benjamin Alfred Addison, M.D., 83, of Brunswick, Georgia passed away Saturday, December 19, 2009 at his residence. A native of Butte, Montana, Dr. Addison was born on November 14, 1926. Dr. Addison was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Alfred and Mabel Ruth Ramsey Adelstein, and by first his wife Barbara Jean Vogel Addison.Dr. Addison remarried Ms. Mary Kathleen Spell in 1980.Dr. Addison is survived by his wife, Mary Kathleen; his four sons, Jeff Addison of Brunswick, Mark Addison of Atlanta, GA, Randy Addison of Louisville, KY, and Rick Addison of San Diego, CA; two daughters-in-law, Lisbeth and Gina Addison; and four grandchildren, Brooke, Matthew, Shelby, and Kate.Dr. Addison was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II from 1944-1945, where he was a Naval Aviation Cadet. After his honorable discharge, Dr. Addison enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his B.A. in 1948. After graduation from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Addison enrolled at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he received his M.D. in 1952. During his attendance at the University of Maryland, he married Ms. Barbara Jean Vogel in 1951. After graduation from the University of Maryland, he began his internship from 1952-1953 at the University Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He later fulfilled his Residency in General Surgery at the University Hospital, becoming the Assistant Resident of Surgery from 1953-1956. Later in 1956, he was appointed to Chief Resident and Instructor of General Surgery. In 1957, Dr. Addison and his family moved to Brunswick, where he began his private medical practice and became an active staff member at the Glynn Brunswick Memorial Hospital. He later became the Chief of Surgery in 1961 and the President of the Glynn County Medical Society in 1967. Dr. Addison was appointed as the Medical Director and Company Physician of the Georgia-Pacific Corporation Pulp & Paper Mill in Brunswick from 1989-2002. Dr. Addison maintained a private medical practice until his retirement in 2004.Among Dr. Addison’s many accreditations are his hospital residencies, appointments, and medical societies. These accreditations include: Fellow N.I.H. in Cancer, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification by American and Georgia Heart Association, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructors Qualification, Active Staff Member Charlton Memorial Hospital, Folkston, GA, Member of Board of Directors of T. B. Association, Glynn County Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Member of Advisory Panel for Ethicon Suture Laboratories, Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomat of the American College of Chest Physicians, Governor of the American Society of Angiology, Diplomat of the American Board of Abdominal Surgery, American Medical Association, Southeastern Surgical Society, and the Glynn County Medical Society. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Commissioner of the Brunswick Housing Authority, and Chairman of City Playground and Recreation Board.
