

Carl Clifford Smith, Jr., age 70, of Brunswick, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Carl was a native of Waycross but lived most of his life in Glynn County. He served as a SGT in the U.S. Air Force during Operation Ranch Hand in the Vietnam War. After the service, he worked as an insurance agent at Interstate Life and Fire, Gulf Life and Woodmen of the World Insurance Companies. While at Gulf Life, Carl was top sales associate for six consecutive years. He later worked as a route manager at Tip Top Bread prior to starting his own carpentry business, Carl Smith Construction. Carl was active in his Church as well as his community, serving as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon and member of the hospitality team at Pine Ridge Baptist Church. He also played catcher for a local men’s softball team and was a Girl Scout Leader.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Stewart Smith of Brunswick; two daughters, Ellen Elizabeth Calandra (Mark) of Wetumpka, AL and Victoria Killingsworth (Philip) of Hurley, MS; three grandsons, Peyton and Brett Killingsworth of Hurley, MS and Nicholas Calandra of Wetumpka, AL; three aunts, Trudie Corley of Avon Park, GA, Ellen Clark of Pennsylvania and Catherine Jordan of Lakeland, FL; a great uncle, James Clifton of Florida; a sister-in-law, Valeria Bennett (Arnie) of Waynesville and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 am at Pine Ridge Baptist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be at Lott Cemetery in Waycross at 2:00 pm Saturday afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles or to Pine Ridge Baptist Church.
