She was born on March 2, 1937, in Troy, N.Y., the daughter of Lillian and William Gold. A member of the National Academy of Arbitrators and National Association of Railroad Referees, Charlotte was a nationally known and highly respected Arbitrator and Mediator who worked into her 80s. One company representative she worked with recently said, “Of all the arbitrators I’ve worked with over the last twenty years, she has taught me the most. Her sharp mind and genial demeanor in arbitration procedures was unmatched. She is the best in the business; my absolute favorite – such a lady, a true gem. I will cherish her guidance and kindness, always.”
She graduated from Smith College (BA) and Cornell University (MA). She stayed at Cornell as Director, Publications Division at the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations, followed by work as Vice President of the American Arbitration Association, up until 1983, where she worked as an editor of The Arbitration Journal. This was the time when she also began work as a Mediator and Arbitrator, a career she assumed full time in 1983. Charlotte worked with a large variety of industries and unions while on the panels of the American Arbitration Association, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and the National Mediation Board, on a wide range of issues from A (Absenteeism) to W (Working Conditions). She also published a number of articles on labor-management and arbitration issues. With her husband, Rodney E. Dennis, she lived at various times in New York City; on Martha's Vineyard; in Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and in Chilmark, England.
Charlotte was predeceased by her husband, Rodney, her brother, Robert Gold and sister, Joanne Thaler.
She is survived by her brother Joseph Gold of Phoenix, AZ; her brother-in-law Manley Thaler and his wife Dodie Thaler of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Rodney’s son and daughter-in-law, John and Judith Dennis of Apopka, FL, and his brother James of Trumansburg, N.Y.; and her nephews and nieces Jeff Thaler of Yarmouth, ME, Robert Thaler of Tallahassee, FL, Judith Mattingly of San Francisco, CA, Amy Schultz of Jupiter, FL, Susan Liebeskind of Atlanta, GA, and Andrew Gold of Allen, TX.
She will be interred privately in a family plot in Waverly, NY.
Donations may be made in her honor to any local food bank. Given that Charlotte had friends across the globe, an online memorial service may be held in June; anyone interested in attending should email Jeff Thaler at [email protected].
