

Donald S. McClain, Jr. 88, of St. Simons Island, died Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Christ Church Frederica with Father Tom Purdy officiating. A private interment will follow in Christ Church Cemetery with Jim Royal, Preston Kirkendall, Carl Baumgardner, Wayne Quinn, Richard Taylor, and Oscar Covington serving as pallbearers. Born December 6, 1925 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Donald S. and Marjorie M. McClain Sr., he was a Veteran of the US Army Air Corps, serving during WWII. Mr. McClain was a longtime resident of Glynn County, and was a member of Christ Church Frederica. Don graduated from Emory University with a Masters degree in Geology, and furthered his education for an additional year in Greece. His decision to move to southeast Georgia was for his lifetime on St. Simons Island and Sea Island. The beaches, ocean, boating, hunting, and casual living attracted him to this area. His club memberships included: St. Simons Jaycees, St. Marys River Management, Glynn County Casino Advisory Board, St. Simons Transportation Study Committee, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Seamanship Specialist, Golden Isles Masonic Lodge 707, St. Simons Mens's Breakfast, Sons of the American Revolution, Georgia Branch of National Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Paulk McClain of St. Simons Island, a daughter, Corinne McClain of Brunswick, a step daughter, Doree R. Avera and husband Richard Taylor of St Simons Island, grandsons, Dylan and Bradley Harrison, step grandsons, Jack and Sam Taylor, a great granddaughter, Braleigh Harrison, a nephew, Philip Donahoo, as well as other nieces and nephews, and in laws Beckie Paulk Gowen, Bobby Paulk and wife Vila, and Jim Paulk and wife Pat.
