We thought of George again last year when the couple was found that he searched for so many years with his black water diving. Rest in peace, George. Their families now have "closure" if such a thing exists.

George was a friend to many and I include myself as one.  I knew him from the time I was 18 and he was always very respectful and concerned for my well-being.  I was also a diver, but never had the chance to dive with George and other friends.
I am very sad to hear of this great loss to the community of Glynn County and so many people whose lives he touched.
Rest in Peace, my friend.  You deserve it.

You were a friend and a fine American. We will miss your wit and humor and tremendous insight into modern American culture social order and disorder. May God’s grace embrace your soul, may You Rest In Peace.

Friend George, you will be missed. When George came by the St Simons Southern Bell Switching center, he always had a cheerful hello for me. George was a friend to everyone that he met. Our customers would call in and request for OUR telephone man to come out and fix their phone.  GOD SPEED MY FRIEND.

I used to drive through the gate house to visit my parents or my husband at work and my daughter 9 months to 3 at the time would love to visit with Mr. George and share a donut with him. He was such a great man

My condolences to the family, Captain George was one of a kind I met him back when I was 15 years old waiting tables at Shoney's big boy restaurant drive-thru on highway 17 he and three other of his coworkers from Southern Bell would meet up and drink coffee in the evenings sometimes in the early morning before they went to work. My mom's name was Betty he named me Betty Junior then they had name tags made for us that said big Betty and little Betty. George was a rescue black diver when the city Lanier bridge was knocked down by a large boat shoney's made sandwiches and fixed coffee and took to them out to the guys as they were rescuing and recovering people. Years later 18 years ago I went to work on Sea Island as security officer and our friendship was rekindled he was a good man a good friend and a good co-worker. Myself CJ Sharp and another coworker Gwen Johnson took Georgia to Jacksonville one morning in about 28 minutes to the hospital to have a couple of heart stents put in George thought he was just going to stay a couple hours and come right back home we drove him in his truck I was the driver when road shotgun and gave me directions, George was in the back seat after we got there I went up to get George's paperwork I told the lady he thinks he's just going to be here a couple hours should we wait see giggled and said no let Mr Baker know he's going to be here a couple of days he was not happy. We stayed with him until they took him back for his surgery we headed back home. Gwen kept his truck for him and cleaned it out vacuumed it wiped it down washed it and when he returned home she took it back to he told her thank you for all you ahd CJ did but I know one thing you two ladies will never drive me anywhere again but y'all did save my life and I'm grateful for that. We're going to miss you Captain George but you're no longer in any pain and I know you are writing stories and telling stories to anybody that will listen RIP my friend, CJ Sharpe💔

Condolences to his family!

George was a unique, honest and dedicated employee. I worked with George beginning in 1987 and would often stop in my travels to talk with him and listen to his ventures both with the company and as the trusted deep water rescue diver that he provided to our county. Yon never saw him without at least 2 radio/telephones and 3 pagers and with the invent of cell service, we laughed as he explained why he was carrying 4 separate cell phones along with the tools on his telephone belt. In our later years when we met, George always would bring me up to date with his latest diving ventures.  I always thanked him for his dedication to the community. Rest in peace my friend -you will be missed.






George and I often ended up on opposite sides of the bar having dinner at Chelsea.  Invariably, he had a dog eared paperback and a pair of dark framed readers.  Eventually, we’d acknowledge each other, and he’d greet me with “Hello, young fella’.”  George was a kind and gentle soul.

Of course I remember George.  He was a regular figure on the island when I first came here in 1974.  So sorry to see this.  He did a lot of good deeds.



 

I have known George since 1988.  Use to have breakfast with him and a few others at Cafe Frederica.  Also saw him at Frederica House when he would have dinner there before going in to work. Worked with him at Sea Island when he was there and I was at Glynn County Police.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing.  He was one of the nicest person's you could ever meet and his stories of the blackwater adventures were great.

May you RIP Brother.  My thoughts, prayers and condolences to his family.


Always a favorite who was never at a loss for conversation. A very special person who leaves quite a legacy in what he achieved.
