George was born July 18th, 1941 and raised in Savannah, Georgia to parents Helen and George Ruehling, Jr. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Clemson University and enjoyed a successful career at several chemical plants in the area before shifting careers. Always interested in growth and ready for a new challenge, he went to work for Glynn County Schools, where he served as Director of Data Processing and later as Chief Financial Officer. After retirement, he served as the Parish Administrator at St. William Catholic Church. He felt blessed to finish his career surrounded by his parish family, doing work that he loved.
George was ordained as a permanent deacon in the Catholic Church 45 years ago. He began serving at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brunswick and later at St. William Catholic Church on St. Simons Island. In his role as deacon, he led RCIA classes, presided over the sacrament of baptism, and officiated many marriages within the community. He had a gift for bringing the Gospel to life, making it feel relevant to everyday experiences through his homilies at Mass. One of his greatest joys was serving the Church alongside his wife, Faye, as they worked hand in hand in various ministries throughout the years.
George loved being outdoors and could often be seen walking through the neighborhood, greeting neighbors and dogs with equal joy. In earlier years, he enjoyed playing the guitar and singing with Faye and members of a close-knit prayer group. He lived an active life that included golf, tennis, and tending beautiful flowers and gardening with his wife. The family cherished summer vacations at the lake—times filled with good food, sunshine, and the simple joy of being together.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 64 years, Faye Ruehling; his children, George Ruehling IV (Sarah), Debbie Miles (Dave), Mark Ruehling, and Jennifer Gross (Trey); his grandchildren, Jesse Ruehling, Hunter Ruehling, Scott Miles, Kathy Vasquez, Beth Miles, Victoria Rahn, Mark Ruehling Jr., Makenzie Ruehling, Wyatt Ruehling, Joey Gross, Ryan Gross, and Kara Gross; and seven great-grandchildren.
Family was everything to George. Life with Faye and their children, grandchildren, and great-grands brought him immense joy. He made a lasting mark on the hearts of all who knew him and will be deeply missed.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. William Catholic Church this Saturday, April 11th at 10:00am with a reception to follow at 11:15am in the Parish Hall. Please join us at either time as we gather to celebrate George’s life and share cherished memories.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
