

Gilbert R. Smith, 71, of Darien, died Saturday, March 31, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 2PM Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Northside Baptist Church in Darien with Rev. Bill Brown and Rev. Randall Collins officiating. Interment will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery with, Thomas Tomas, Burley Kirkland, Douglas Goforth, Jason Conway, Wayne Folts, and Shaun Conway serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Calvin Johnson, Dr. Jack Aimee, Dr. Kenyon Meadows and Cancer Center Staff, a very special person and Doctor, Dr. Collette Lee-Lewis and staff of Davita Dialysis Clinic serving as honorary pallbearers.
Born December 28, 1940 in Baltimore Maryland to the late Ellsworth G. and Virginia G. Smith, he was a retired electrician from Hercules after 28 years of service. Mr. Smith was a member and past master of Live Oak Lodge #137 F&AM. He had resided in McIntosh County for the past 42 years and was known as a workaholic always tinkering with many projects. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid hunter, but more than anything he loved his family and spending time with them. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Hitchcock and Gordon Smith.
Survivors include three daughters, Vicki Kirkland and husband Burley, Judi Smith Goforth and husband Doug, and Cindy Folts and husband Wayne, all of Darien, two sons, Gilbert R. “Smitty” Smith Jr. and wife Mindy of Garden City, and Trey Hutcheson of Brunswick, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, four brothers Donald J. Smith of Brooklet, Ronald Smith of Kentucky, Leon Hitchcock of Brunswick and Timothy Hitchcock, and one sister Linda Dickerson of Maryland, his faithful canine companion, Sweetie, and caregivers, Jason Conway and Pamela Hutcheson, several nieces and nephews.
