Gloria Louise Thompson, age 85, of Townsend, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Hospice of the Golden Isles. She was born on June 4, 1939 in Cox, GA. to the late Eugene Willard Poppell and Johnnie Louise Morrison Poppell.
Gloria worked alongside her sister-in-law in Martin’s Flower Shop, Hinesville, GA and held several positions at Speed’s Kitchen in Shellman Bluff, which was owned by her mother-in-law. She was an excellent cook and well known for her famous pineapple upside down cake. She loved flowers, especially magnolias, hydrangeas, amaryllis and peace lilies.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family.
Her brothers, Wallace, Ernest, Stevie and Patrick Poppell, preceded Gloria in death.
She is survived by her husband, James (Bob) Thompson; her sons, William “Scott” Speed of Darien and Christopher “Chris” Speed of Hinesville; step-daughters, Beth Thompson Harden, Rick of Townsend and Susan Thompson Peterson of Albany; grandchildren, Austin Speed, Matt Hilton and John Matthews; great-grandchildren, Maggie Hilton, James Hilton and John Hilton and a brother, Larry Poppell of Longview, TX.
Visitation will be June 28, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm with the funeral service to follow at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church, 1282 Sutherland Bluff Drive NE, Townsend, GA. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.
