Harriett Jane Martin Katz, age 102, passed away SEGRMC Brunswick Campus after a brief illness on November 7, 2018. She was born in Seminole County, Georgia on June 18, 1916 to the late Clarence Charles Martin and Martha Ann Alday Martin. She moved with her family to Bainbridge, Georgia which she would later call home. At the age of 26, during World War II, she moved to Biloxi, Mississippi to work in a factory to help out with the war effort. It was there that she met a handsome soldier from Cincinnati, Ohio, Stanley Earl Katz (Earl), whom she married after a whirl wind romance. The two moved to Bainbridge but Earl was soon deployed overseas with the Army Air Corps where he remained for the duration of the war
Harriett and Earl settled into family life in Bainbridge and had four children, Stanley Earl Katz, Jr. (Stanley), Charles Wilhelm Katz (Charles), Martin Jerome Katz (Jerry), and Brenda Kaye Katz-Flexer (BK). She was also blessed to have a step daughter Erlene Katz Abshire. In 1962 the Katz family moved to Albany, Georgia where Harriett remained until 1985. She later lived on Lake Hartwell with her sister Helen Terrell, where she daily enjoyed fishing off of the pontoon boat or their dock. She was known by friends and family as a “fish whisperer” of sorts. She eventually moved to Brunswick in 1998, where she remained until her death.
No matter where Harriett lived, she was active in the community, did countless hours of charitable work, fed the underprivileged, took in strays of both the two and four legged kind. She was known as a selfless care giver to many. She will be remembered for her caring heart, her dry wit and her incredible cooking skills among her many attributes. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Harriett was predeceased by her husband Earl and her eldest son Stanley. She is survived by son Charles Katz (Sandy) of Waco, Texas; son Jerry Katz of Denver, Colorado; daughter B.K. Katz-Flexer of Brunswick, Georgia; daughter Earlene Abshire of Cincinnati, Ohio; and sister Helen Terrell of Brunswick, Georgia; numerous grand children whom she loved dearly.
Harriett will be laid to rest beside Earl at Floral Memory Gardens in Albany, Georgia and a private celebration of her life will be held at Lake Seminole in the future. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Humane Society of the Golden Isles in Brunswick.
