Harry "Punky" Legette Owens

Harry “Punky” Legette Owens of Fairford, England and Brunswick, Georgia went to heaven Friday, July 22, 2022, at the age of 88. Punky, as he was affectionately known by his family, was born in Brunswick to the late Mitchell Edward Owens and the late Ila Burns Owens. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby, Barry, and David Owens.

Punky was a member of Norwich Baptist Church and had been attending Pine Ridge Baptist Church since returning home from England in December 2021. He faithfully attended church every week and even participated in the adult Vacation Bible School the week before his death. He was a graduate of Glynn Academy (1951) and the University of Georgia. His love for children led him to have a very successful teaching career. He retired at the age of 80 from the United States Department of Defense as an Educator. His professional teaching career allowed him to live in Germany, Turkey, and England. During his time in England, he acquired many close friends who loved and cared for him and considered him a family member. He touched lives all over the world.

Punky was a generous, kindhearted man who loved the Lord. His ministry was encouraging others and when there was a need he was ready to help in any way. He always enjoyed family gatherings and was a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was an avid reader and a man that was steadfast in his religious faith. Everyone who knew Punky loved him and he will be missed by all.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Mitchell and Sallie Owens of Jacksonville Florida; a sister, Peggy Ann Moore of Brunswick and two sisters-in-law, Frances Owens and Rhonda Owens, both of Brunswick. Many friends, nieces, and nephews are left to cherish the memories of Harry Legette Owens.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Pine Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Moore officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Church Social Hall. He will be laid to rest in Palmetto Cemetery at a later date.
