

John Delbert Lovvorn, 88 devoted husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend went home to be with the Lord August 26, 2017 at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 1PM Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Brunswick with Dr. Chris Winford officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wisdom Seekers Sunday School Class, Mr. Jeff Holcombe, CEO Marshland Credit Union, and the Board of Directors of Marshland Credit Union. Interment will follow in Jacksonville National Cemetery with Military Honors on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 9 AM.
A native of Walker County, Alabama, Mr. Lovvorn enlisted in the USMC at 17, received an honorable discharge after his term of duty, returned home, and graduated with the Curry High School class of 1948. He entered Auburn University in January of 1949; however, he joined the US Naval Reserves in 1950 at the beginning of the Korean Conflict and was accepted into Flight Training, earning his wings as a Naval Aviator and receiving his commission in 1952. After training as a fighter pilot flying WWII Hellcat aircraft, he was assigned for helicopter training and subsequently designated Helicopter pilot 1050, reporting to Commander Air Forces Pacific Fleet for duty. Mr. Lovvorn served 30 months in Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron HS-1 prior to being released to inactive duty at the end of the conflict. He returned to Auburn and received his BS in Agricultural Education in 1955. After flying as a weekend warrior for several months in the Naval Reserve, he applied for and was accepted into the Regular Navy where he served for 23 years, retiring with the rank of Lt. Commander in June, 1972.
Mr. Lovvorn embarked upon a second career as a high school teacher, employed by Glynn County Schools in August , 1972, establishing the Naval Jr. ROTC program at Brunswick High School, which he lead for the following 3 years. He earned his Masters of Education from Auburn and returned to teaching in his chosen field of agricultural and horticultural education, retiring from the school system as Vocational Supervisor and Assistant Principal after 20 years at BHS.
An active member of First Baptist Church, Brunswick, Mr. Lovvorn served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the personnel, executive, and finance committees during his more than 47 years there. He served on the Board of Directors of the Marshland Credit Union for the past 20 years and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity as well as Phi Delta Kappa honorary fraternity for Educators and the American Helicopter Society. While blessed with many talents and skills, Mr. Lovvorn enjoyed nothing better than tending his garden and spending time with his family and many friends. His loving wisdom shared with kindness, warmth, and humor will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, James L. Lovvorn.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years Nita E. Lovvorn of Brunswick, a daughter, Diane L. Boylston and husband Dale of Roswell, GA, three grandchildren, Andrew Doster, Ellen Doster and Emily Doster, three brothers, William Q. Lovvorn and wife Carolyn of Oxford, AL, Dwight Lovvorn of Peoria, IL, and Wendell G. Lovvorn and wife Emily of LaGrange, GA, several nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends Tuesday morning from 11AM until the Funeral Hour at First Baptist Church of Brunswick. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. www.edomillerandsons.com
