Margaret “Meg” Williams Gore of The Meadows in Meridian passed away on January 22, 2015 after a valiant battle with cancer. Meg was born on October 14, 1955, in Brunswick, Georgia to the late Frank B. Williams, Jr. and Margaret Hopkins Williams, and was a lifelong resident of McIntosh County.
Meg attended McIntosh County Academy and graduated in 1973. She graduated from Tift College in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She taught from 1977 at Eulonia Primary School until she married the love of her life, Tom Gore in 1980. After their marriage she enjoyed several years of shrimp fishing adventures with him. After the birth of their three sons, she became the bookkeeper for Gore Seafood for 20 years, kept books for several of her closest friends, and was a substitute postmaster for the Meridian Post Office.
Meg was a lifelong member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Parish Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. Meg’s grandmother, Margaret Webb Hopkins, in 1956, was the Organizing Regent for St. Andrews Parish Chapter, Daughter’s of the American Revolution. Meg carried on the tradition serving as Chapter Regent from 1988-1994 and Chapter Treasurer for more than 20 years. Meg was a member of the McIntosh County Academy Band Boosters Club from 1994 to 2012 and served as treasurer. Tom and Meg made many trips with the truck and trailer stuffed with band uniforms and instruments supporting the marching band. The band calendars remained one of her favorite activities even after her sons graduated. She sold daffodils for the American Cancer Society as a fundraiser for many years and will be remembered by many with the daffodil hat perched on her head. Her volunteer work and fund raising abilities were renowned throughout the county and region. For ten years, she volunteered as the Cub Scout leader and Den Mother.
She was an avid card player and loved entertaining friends regularly. She loved bow making, crocheting baby blankets, afghans, hats and scarves. Members of the community were happy recipients of these gifts and her projects were always evident in her home. She loved learning new arts and crafts, including jewelry making, caning chairs, macramé, and cross-stitch. She enjoyed decorating Tom’s shrimp boat for the Blessing of the Fleet and frequently brought home awards for Gore Seafood. No school dance was complete without Megs magic touch from middle school through high school for all three sons. Christmas was an event that encompassed the entire year for preparation and included everyone. Every five years, Meg helped organize high school class reunions. After her father became ill, the family moved back to The Meadows to help care for him. She celebrated life with a gathering this summer to introduce “MEGaritaville”. Meg had a wide variety of friends and knew no stranger. She enjoyed life, bringing love and laughter to everyone.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Thomas L. Gore; and their three sons, Thomas Lanier Gore, Jr. (Shawna Hendrix and her 3 children; Daysha, Delta, and Dacoda), Willis Franklin Gore (Catherine Newton), and Robert Francis Gore; one brother, Frank B. Williams, III (Martha); an aunt; Honey Fanning Durden, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her younger brother Willis Hopkins Williams.
