

Dr. Robert Lee Hawkins, MD, FACS, born in Richmond, California on August 24, 1952, passed away on January 23, 2025. He was the son of the late Robert Lee Hawkins, Sr., and late Dorothy (née Harris) Hawkins. Robert lived a life dedicated to service, knowledge, and his family.
A graduate of Los Alamitos High School's Class of 1970, Robert went on to pursue higher education at the University of California, Irvine, earning his undergraduate degree. His passion for medicine led him to obtain his medical doctorate from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating in 1982. He completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of Arizona and a residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas, where he specialized in colorectal surgery.
Over his 40-year career, Dr. Hawkins earned the prestigious designation of Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a testament to his skill, dedication, and contributions to the field of medicine. His expertise and compassionate care touched the lives of many patients and their families.
For the past 30 years, Robert made his home in the St. Simons and Brunswick, Georgia, community, where he raised his two beloved sons, Matthew and Andrew. He was a voracious reader with a particular love for science fiction and found solace in nature, especially during his time exploring Yosemite National Park. As a young man, Robert’s dedication and perseverance were evident as he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
Robert is survived by his sons, Matthew Hawkins and his wife Lauren Hawkins of Atlanta, Georgia, and Andrew Hawkins, also of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by two grandchildren he loved dearly: Harper and Hudson Hawkins.
Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Brian Hawkins of Forest Grove, Oregon and Laurie Hawkins of Caldwell, Idaho and several nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service will be held at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home on Thursday, January 30, 2025 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, where loved ones will gather to honor and celebrate Robert’s remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Colon Cancer Coalition or the Hospice of the Golden Isles.
