Robert McPhelan Winter

The family will receive friends between 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, Georgia. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 11, 2019 at St. Williams Catholic Church, 2300 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. The inurnment will follow the service in Oglethorpe Memorial Garden Cemetery.

Robert was born in Savannah, Georgia on December 28, 1928, he was a son to the late Alphonse and the late Elizabeth McPhelan Winter. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years, Helen Kearney Winter; and a brother, Alphonse A. Winter, Jr.

Mr. Winter was a graduate of Dothan High School in Dothan, Alabama and went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Auburn University. Following college, he joined the US Naval Corp of Engineers and served time in Hawaii during the Korean War.

As someone who loved to travel, he enjoyed a successful career as an engineer that took him all over the world. He later settled in Georgia and was a longtime resident of St. Simons Island.

Left to cherish his memories are his children, Clare and Bob Diamond, Mary-Ellen and Chris Doyle, and Patrick Winter and Mardi Schmeichel; and grandchildren, Maureen and Molly Diamond and Maggie, Tess, Liam, and Lucy Doyle.
