

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robin Alan Saul, 71, and Connie Cline Saul, 70, of Gainesville, GA, who tragically lost their lives in an automobile accident on Jan. 21, 2025. Their untimely departure has left a void in the hearts of all who knew them. Robin and Connie shared a beautiful life together for nearly 50 years, married for 45. Their love and devotion to one another were evident to all who crossed their path. They were an inseparable pair, known for their kindness, generosity, and unwavering support for friends and family. Robin was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He was a man of great integrity and compassion, always ready to lend a helping hand. Connie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She had a nurturing soul and was the heart and soul of her family. For both Robin and Connie, their two grandsons were the light of their lives. The couple were active members of their churches in both Gainesville (Brown’s Bridge Church) and in St. Simon’s Island (St. Simon’s United Methodist).
Together, Robin and Connie created a family filled with love, warmth, and cherished memories. They are survived by a son, Bryan Saul, daughter-in-law Kendra Kock-Saul, and grandsons Fynnian and Caydan Saul, who live in Asheville, NC. Also surviving are Robin’s brother, Richard Saul, and sister-in-law, Carol Tucker, of Gaithersburg, MD, nephew Zak Saul and wife Leah Whitehouse and their daughter, Josephine, of Richmond, VA, and cousins Jim Saul (and wife Millie) of Riner, VA, Louise Saul of Christiansburg, VA, and Carrie Saul Skaggs (husband Richard) of Radford, VA.
The son of George and Marie Saul, Robin was born and raised in Roanoke, VA. After graduating from William Fleming High School (1972), he graduated from Hampden-Sydney College (1976) with a double major in Math and Business. While at H-SC, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a Baker Scholar, graduated summa cum laude, and was Captain of the H-SC baseball team. He then went on to receive his MBA at the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School (1978).
Robin enjoyed a long career as a newspaper executive with Landmark Media Enterprises beginning at The Virginia-Pilot in Norfolk, VA (1978) where he became the VP of Production /Operation (1989-1993). He then became the Publisher of the Carrol County Times in Westminster, MD (1993-2004). His career with Landmark culminated with his promotion to President & Publisher of the News & Record in Greensboro, NC (2004-2013). After retiring from the News & Record in 2013, Robin and Connie moved to Toxaway, NC where they lived for 9 years before settling in Gainesville, Ga for the last 3 years. In his retirement, Robin continued to be active in the community, including serving as an Advisory Board Member of Transylvania Endowment (2016-2022) and receiving the Paul Harris Fellow award in the Rotary Club. He remained an avid sports fan, especially passionate about his beloved NY Yankees, along with the UNC Tar Heels basketball program.
Connie was born in Portsmouth, VA, the daughter of Barry and Alice Cline. She attended Longwood College in Farmville, VA and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA where she graduated in 1977 and 1979 respectively with Bachelor’s and Graduate degrees in education. She immediately began her career teaching elementary school in Va. Beach until 1993 when she and Robin moved to Maryland. After moving to Maryland, Connie became an active member of the Westminster community, as an adjunct faculty member of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) and also working for the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, all while continuing to be a full-time Mom and homemaker. She continued to be active in her community after moving to Greensboro, NC, where she became a full-time volunteer for the Greensboro Symphony Guild and an active member of the Garden & Herb Club. Connie was also a talented interior designer and decorator, having remodeled and decorated all of their homes through the years, and served or volunteered for multiple community and neighborhood foundations and groups.
A joint Celebration of Life memorial service will be held to honor the lives of Robin and Connie and the legacy they leave behind. Details of the service will be announced in the near future.
