

Walter Frederick Meilander Jr., 81, of Jekyll Island passed away April 14, 2013. A memorial service will be held at St. Richard's Episcopal Church at 11:00 AM on April 27, 2013 with Rev. Dee Shaffer officiating. Walter was born in Maple Heights, Ohio on September 19, 1931. He grew up in rural Ohio and married Ann, his high school sweetheart. He worked for Ford Motor Company for 32 years, and retired as a supervisor. Walter was active in the Episcopal Church and many community organizations while living in Ohio, including serving as president of the Kenston Recreation Center. He was a past patron of the Eastern Star, a Shriner, and a member of the Knights of the York Cross of Honor. Following his retirement, he and Ann moved to Jekyll Island, and they spent many happy years there enjoying the beauty of the island and their many wonderful friends. Walter was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow of the Lions Club, and he was a life member of the Potters Guild. He was an active member of the Art Association of Jekyll Island, the Jekyll Island Singers, and St. Richard's Episcopal Church. He especially enjoyed his dear friends of the Eight Bells and the Bike Club. He was a kind and generous man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Walter is survived by his beloved wife Ann Meilander, three daughters, Margery Hankinson (Rick), Linda Hambright, and Amy Meilander, five grandchildren, Jessica Harwood, Tom Hankinson (Holly), Becky Kimball, Sam Hambright (Cassandra), and Scott Richards, and four great grandchildren, Raina, Liam, Frost, and Aiden. Walter is also survived by two brothers and one sister. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway Brunswick, GA 31525. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
