Jack was born in Brunswick to the late William Glenn Moran, Sr. and Mary Margaret Furlong Moran. He graduated from Glynn Academy in 1951 and went on to attend both the University of Georgia and North Georgia College. Following his studies, he proudly served in the United States Army for two years.
After his military service, Jack began a dedicated career in banking, working with Brunswick American National Bank and later the First Bank of Brunswick, which is now Ameris Bank. In 1977, he took on a national role with the Small Business Administration’s first Small Business Casualty team, traveling across the country to assist communities in the aftermath of hurricanes, tornadoes, and other disasters. He returned to Ameris Bank in 1983, where he remained until his retirement in 1998.
Jack had a lifelong love for sports. He was a talented baseball player, competing for Glynn Academy, the American Legion, North Georgia College, and during his Army service. He also played for the Arco team and was honored as their favorite manager for three consecutive years, proudly claiming a .400 batting average and a 90% win record during that time.
An avid outdoorsman, Jack enjoyed fishing, golfing, and especially duck hunting—earning him the nickname “Doctor Duck.” He celebrated four holes-in-one over his golf career and rarely missed a Georgia Bulldogs game, always cheering on his beloved team. He was also a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Brunswick.
Jack is survived by his sons, W.G. “Jack” Moran III (Gina) of Brunswick, Michael S. Moran (Darlene) of Hawaii, and Stephen Cookson of Brunswick; his daughter, Lori Laughridge (Steve) of Florida; twelve grandchildren: Aaron, Lauren, Austin, Bryan, Nikki, Stephen, Stuart, Samantha, Taylor, Jackson, Summer, and April; a sister, Lucy Cauley (George) of Soperton, GA; and his lifelong best friend, Don Peters of Athens. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen McCardle Moran, and his sister, Kay Chapman.
