Mr. Slaughter was a native of Langdale, Ala. and had been a resident of Brunswick most of his life. He attended Glynn Academy before joining the U.S. Navy, serving 9 years and then serving 4 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was retired from Gulf Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Brunswick.
Mr. Slaughter enjoyed gardening and spending time at the St. Simons Pier fishing and socializing with the “regulars” who became his friends and fishing buddies and nicknamed him "Pop". His favorite past time other than fishing was watching baseball-he was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan for many years. His last trip to see his Braves play was when he traveled to Florida for a spring training game with his family in 2008.
He loved his family very much, especially “his baby” Nadine. He was a loving husband and wonderful caretaker during her last few years.
Mr. Slaughter spent the last few months of his life making friends and entertaining the staff at Magnolia Manor. He will be missed by not only his family and close friends, but also by those he met at Magnolia Manor and Heartland Hospice. They are our “angels” and took such good care of him and our family during these last few months.
Mr. Slaughter was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nadine Spaulding Slaughter, his parents, William E. and Minnie Viola Slaughter, his sisters, Francis Eileene Turner, Rebecca Rowena Durham and Viola Laverne Hadley and his step-son, Tommy "Bubba" Blount.
Survivors are his son, William Andrew Slaughter, Jr. (Marilyn) and a daughter, Pamela B. O’Quinn (Terry) both of Brunswick, two sisters, Alice Nadine Moore and Janet London both of Homerville, Ga., grandchildren, Lee O’Quinn, Chris O’Quinn, Megan Slaughter, William Slaughter III, James Slaughter, Heather Slaughter and Matthew Slaughter, step-grandchildren, Chris Whalen, Jessica Rivera, Justin King, and Lauren King, five great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
