Albert Engel passed away peacefully at the Brentwood Care Centre in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at the age of 97 years. He was born June 13, 1926 at Fraserton, Alberta, the 12th of 13 children born to Jacob and Klara Engel. Albert and his family farmed in the Hanna, Alberta area for many years. He was educated at Red Rose School.
In the spring of 1952, Albert relocated to Calgary from Hanna and worked for the City of Calgary for a short time. Early in 1954, Albert farmed along with his sister Clara and her husband William Bogner at their farm in Didsbury, Alberta. In the fall of 1954 Albert returned to Calgary and worked once again as a foreman for the City until his retirement in June, 1985 after 31 years of service. In 1955, Alberta met his future wife Bernice (nee Goss) and they were married in 1957. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage until Bernice’s passing in 2016.
Camping trips in and around Alberta made many memorable times shared with friends as they belonged to the White Hatters Trailer Group.
As a member of Foothills Lutheran Church, Albert enjoyed being Church Trustee in the 1970’s helping to keep the lawn maintained and the church grounds looking good.
Albert saw growth and changes in the City over the years. At 95, Albert still continued to drive, and enjoyed living in his own home until health-related issues required him to relocate to the Brentwood Care Centre in 2021.
Albert is predeceased by his wife Bernice, his parents Klara and Jacob Engel, as well as six brothers and six sisters. Albert leaves to mourn his passing: his daughter LuAnn and her husband Dwayne Zahara; one granddaughter, Cheyann, and her husband Dominic Furger; four great-grandsons: Troy, Mason, Oliver and Treyson; his sister-in-law Betty Rehkopf; and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel – 3220 4 Street N.W. Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday June 14, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
