Sandy Hyde died peacefully on August 10, 2026. He leaves behind a close and loving family including his daughter; Janet (Tom Mercik), grandchildren Eric Bruce (Maria) and Allison Bruce, his great-grandchildren; Nicholas and Victoria, his brother Farrell Hyde (Marguerite) and their children; Murray Hyde and Barbara Hyde (Stephen Thwaites).
He was predeceased by his wife Grace (nee Jones) and his daughter Lynn Hyde Morrison.
Sandy was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on June 20, 1924 and grew up enjoying his youth in Montreal. After high school he attended McGill University for six months then enlisted. As a pilot in World War Two he trained international pilots and navigators in Newfoundland. After the war he graduated from McGill University as a professional engineer and married his great love, Grace, in 1949. They were together for 68 years until Grace’s death in 2017. Sandy had a distinguished career in engineering and business management. His work took him across Canada and internationally and involved him in the construction of desalination plants, major bridges, pre-engineered steel buildings and more.
Sandy had a wide range of interests including golf, curling, bridge, reading, symphony and opera. Many of his happiest times were spent with friends and family at the family cottage near Lachute, Quebec.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and remembered for his charming smile, infectious laughter, intelligence and wit. Looking back on his 102 years of life, from childhood in Montreal to wartime service, from engineering to world travel, from cottage summers to opera halls, Sandy believed one guiding principle always applied: he worked hard and loved his family.
