Allan was a lifelong Calgarian, grew up in Tuxedo Park, and graduated from Western Canada High School. He served with the rank of Gunner during World War II as a wireless operator in the 5th Canadian Anti-tank Regiment. His name was published in the London Gazette on April 4, 1946, by the KING’s Order for being Mentioned in Dispatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished service.
After the war, Allan worked as a tinsmith and furnace installer, initially alongside his father and brothers in the family business, F. Conn & Sons Ltd., and later was self-employed until his retirement in 1986. He exemplified excellence in all that he did.
Allan loyally served his Lord Jesus and was a loving and dedicated husband and father. He was a man of strong faith who treasured both God’s word and God’s Spirit. He often assisted and spoke at the Lighthouse Mission – a collaborative ministry of evangelical churches in Calgary, which over a 28-year period provided countless sandwiches, coffee and the hope of the gospel to women and men in need four nights a week. His spiritual legacy is one of knowing and walking with God.
Allan was a gentleman who will be remembered for his generosity, for his laugh and humour, and likely most fondly for his stories. He loved to play golf and particularly enjoyed a good dessert.
He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his son David, sister-in-law Joyce Saich, nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He will lovingly be remembered as “Pa” by the Gerkes of Calgary.
Allan was predeceased by his wife Pearl (nee Taylor) and his brothers James “Jim” and Wilfred “Bob”.
His son David would like to express his sincere thanks to the medical staff at the Associate Clinic (particularly Dr. John Haggblad), Integrated Home Care, and Trauma Unit 44 at the Foothills Medical Centre for their expert and attentive care.
