On this journey through life I have been fortunate to meet some very special people along the way.  Uncle Ralph, Aunt Alma, Sharon and Loraine are examples of these special people.  When I moved to Calgary years ago they were so hospitable and loving towards me and I have always treasured the time I spent with them.  Aunt Alma was wonderful in every way.  She was so genuine, had a wonderful sense of humor and was a fantastic cook.  I feel blessed to have been a part of Aunt Alma's life.  Now her spirit has been set free from an aging body, and one day we shall all be together again.  Until then, thank-you Aunt Alma, you made this world a better place!        Love, Mary Ann

Hi Sharon,
I was up at about 4:30 this morning (the Flying Alarm Clocks light off about then) and was checking my emails while waiting for the light to come. You had alerted us your Mom's passing could come any time and at 93 to go quietly in one's sleep is a great end to a great life. That's the rational side speaking. For some reason it hit me as hard as when I got the call that my Mom had died, also again it was time for Mom to go and a blessing too. I won't say that your Mom, my Aunt Alma, was my favourite aunt, all our aunts were so wonderful there could be no favourites among that tribe :-).

I guess though with both I and you guys living in Calgary all those years I saw more of your parents than the others and I remember those visits with a lot of fondness. You mothers love and wonderful sense of humour ... the great discussions I used to have with your Dad about his latest sure-fire invention :-).

Thankfully Rebecca and I were able to visit twice with your Mom when we were over four years ago and we had a great time. I've a call in to her and will speak to her this evening. 

When I got the news about my Mom we were vacationing up the coast at Jurien Bay using a beach house some friends have there. I took the call from Eric or Mary Ann and looked at everyone and just said "It's my Mum ... she's gone." After hugs all around I just sat with my head in my hands tears streaming down my face. Rebecca knew what to do. She said "come on Dad we're going for a walk on the beach". And we did, arm in arm, and she got me to talk about my Mum and all the good memories I will always have of her. It wasn't a long walk maybe 20 minutes or so but when we came back I was ok and the the wonderful memory of the wonderful person she had been was growing in my heart.

Where was Rebecca now when I needed her? Still asleep likely at 5am in her place in Perth. I would have to do my walk on my own with a "virtual Rebecca" On my arm and getting me to start remembering all the wonderful times with my Aunt Alma. And of course it worked it's magic just like the first time. By the time I was half way around the Lake and the sun was just coming up in the East, the wonderful memory of My Aunt Alma was flooding in and all was as it should be. Thank you again Virtual Rebecca!

My thoughts are with you Sharon and with Loraine and everyone who will be dealing with the loss in their own way. Give Lester a big hug for me too. I'll email Lorraine in the next day or two and you can tell her that if you get talking to her. Share this much too long email with her if you wish.

Best wishes Eric, Mary Ann and Joan. Would love to jump on a plane and come over right away but probably can make that happen just yet. Soon though I hope (I am here in Albert now after all)

I have many fond memories of Auntie Alma.Always loved to visit Alma and Ralph. It was so much fun. Spent a week there in the summer for many years growing up. I think I knew her best of that generation, what an interesting time to grow up. She was so kind and had a great heart. But I'm sure we will meet again. She will be sadly missed. Our condolences to her family.

My fond memories of my Aunt Alma. I always loved her laugh and her smile. As a young girl I looked up to her with her career at the Tall Girl Shop.
Mostly I remember the Boxing Day celebrations, when we looked forward to going to Alma's. She always made us feel welcome as we teenagers took over the basement and carted food down to us.  Especially her Xmas cake with the "hard" icing. Yummy! Many other fond memories, she was a special lady.

Alma hired me to work for her at Tall Girl when I was 17 years old. We went on to work together for many years and she was always so willing to share her knowledge, support and fabulous sense of humour! She will be greatly missed!

Alma was a wonderful sister.  She was always there for me when I was young.  Her and Ralph helped me move from the farm to Calgary to take a business course and for that, I've always been so grateful.  Thank you for all you did for me, Alma.

Alma & Ralph were next door neighbours. I grew to be so impressed with Alma and way she didn't complain; just solved the problem. One time I remember complaining over and over to Ron that I needed a sand box for our little boy to play in. Shortly after, Alma took in 2 little girls to mind. She found a little red wagon,put sand in it, and the little girls played happily.  A lesson for sure.
    Another memory was cooking breakfast one morning when a big black magpie started tapping on my window.  Hairs rose on the nape of my neck and a primal fear seized me--an omen?  Tell Chris and Alma over coffee next day, Alma started laughing. It seemed she had been leaving hamburger on her window sill--and the magpie got the wrong house!  What laughter we had!!
   Alma was bright and inventive, always looking forward.  I remember when her teenage girls were wanting the latest fads and fashions.  Undaunted, Alma studied the new trends and then whipped up lovely fashionable outfits for Sharon and Loraine.  Never wasted time complaining--just solved the problem and got on with it.
   I haven't even mentioned her cooking, yet.  She gave me the recipe for her Candy Cane cookies.  She was convulsed with laughter when she saw my first batch, but I got better and my granddaughter makes them from her recipe now.  It was good to have a Danish cook, good friend and wise and talented lady living next to you.  Alma was special. In loving memory, Shirley Johnson
