Joyce was born in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan on August 28, 1925. She grew up in Bredenbury, and upon graduating high school went to Winnipeg where she became a registered nurse. She met Ted in Red Deer and they married in 1953. Joyce was a beacon of faith, and the epitome of love to all those around her. She was an avid reader and loved a good mystery. Throughout life, Joyce also loved playing games, like bridge and crib. She was especially fond of Scrabble, playing often with her family and her friend Ruth. She became a football fan and enjoyed cheering for the Stampeders, although she had a soft spot for the Riders. Joyce loved the mountains and would often join her children camping at Kananaskis. She also had a fondness for the English countryside and managed to visit there often. Joyce was one of the early members of Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church and attended there for over forty five years.
