Born in Malvern, England, Andy moved to Canada in 1983 for an adventure and to start his family with his wife Gill. He was fond of saying that he aimed for Vancouver, but missed. In Calgary, his dry humor and willingness to lend a hand helped build lasting friendships. Together, he and Gill became part of a strong community of friends and neighbours who shared his beliefs in the importance of kindness and collective action, and the value of homemade beer. He was a dedicated father and grandfather, always ready to lend a helping hand. He jumped in over the years to coach basketball (about which he knew a little), and soccer (about which he knew a little bit more). He volunteered at mountain bike races and luge championships. Andy spent summer weekends introducing his children to camping and hiking around Alberta. He spent more weekends then he could count at scout camps. More recently, he valued time spent singing to his grandchildren (which they seemed to enjoy).
As his kids got older, he dedicated himself to more academic pursuits. He wrote a Ph.D thesis none of us quite understood, a historical fiction novel based on his family, and picture books for his granddaughter. He loved politics, history, reading, writing, and spending time with his family. Andy continued to enjoy the outdoors in his recently acquired and much loved VW camper van. He was adored by his grandchildren (even though he didn’t push them on the swing as fast as Gigi).
He will be thought of fondly for his generosity, his kindness, and his terrible jokes.
He is remembered with much love by his wife Gill; his children Matt, Caitlin (Kevin), and Chris (JJ); and his grandchildren Rory, Charlie, Dylan, and Aiden.
Andy is also survived by his sister Maggie and brother John; his nieces Christine, Caroline (Ben, Zac, and Sam), and Emma; his sister-in-law Lilliam; and nieces Melissa and Monica.
He is predeceased by his parents Philip and Elizabeth, and his brother Martin.
Family flowers only, thank you. Donations in his memory may be made to CUPS Calgary at https://www.cupscalgary.com or to a charity of your choice.
