Bruce is survived by his partner of 23 years, Ilze Piercey. Ilze and Bruce met in 1978 and parted ways in 1980 only to be reunited, this time for good in 2004. Bruce leaves his son, James Day (Danielle Causarano); daughters, Lisa Re (Daniel Re) and Emily Day (David Schmoll); as well as his much-loved grandchildren, Jack and Alyssa. He will also be deeply missed by his siblings, Patricia Dingle and Bob Day (Wendy Day); his sister-in-law, Yvonne Day; as well as his niece, Kim Panici (John Panici); nephew, Stephen Dingle (Tiffany Elliott); and five beloved great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Douglas and Agnes (nee Yanta) Day; his brother, Gordon Day; his brother-in-law, John Dingle; and his great-niece, Liv Dingle.
Bruce was born and raised in the small town of Haileybury, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours Bachelor of Mathematics in 1979 and attained his designation as a Chartered Accountant in 1980. He was employed by Thorne Riddell (predecessor to KPMG) until 1984 when he joined Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI) as Vice President, Treasurer. He later served as Vice President, Finance at Rogers Wireless and Vice President, Corporate Development at RCI. He retired from full-time employment in 2006 and at various times served on the boards of directors of JDS Fitel Inc., JDS Uniphase Inc., Group IV Semi-Conductor Inc. and Integrated Asset Management Corp. He also served as Chair of the Independent Review Committee of Heritage Educational Foundation and as a member of the Audit Committee of the City of Calgary.
Bruce said he would most like to be remembered for his love of family and good friends. He had a passion for adventures in the great outdoors, including summiting many peaks in the Canadian Rockies, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro twice and hiking to Everest Base Camp. He travelled to more than 50 countries on six continents, including trips to Tuktoyaktuk, Antarctica, Easter Island, Greenland and Myanmar. He also enjoyed golf, single malt whisky and red wine.
His final message is “Live well and have fun. It is later than you think.”
