Charlotte was born May 20 1926, in Drawehn, Koslin, Germany, to Paul and Martha Strey (nee Shultz). She was the youngest of five children, Karl, Richard, Paul, Louise, and Fritz. Her parents had a small farm next to a lake. They often ate fish from the lake. Whenever they had company the guests were treated to a meal of fish. She went to public school to Grade 8, and then worked on the farm until the end of the war. At the end of March she returned to the farm, where she was then re-united with her mother.
On April 30 she gave birth to her first child, Peter (Glenda). In March 1946 re-located to the Schleswig-Holstein region of what was then West Germany. She worked on a farm in the area, and met Adolf Biederstadt in 1952. They got married on June 6, 1953, and Adolf adopted Peter as his son. They immigrated to Canada later that year. Her other three sons were all born in Canada: Karl (Carolle), Fred (Cindy), and Harold (Louise). The family lived on farms in the Crossfield and Beiseker areas from 1953 to 1971 then later moved to Calgary. Charlotte enjoyed gardening and swimming. Adolf died in February 2007.
