It is with profound sadness that the Holmes family shares the news of our father's passing one week before his ninety-second birthday. He will be dearly missed by his children: Stephen (Kathy Kim) Holmes, Brent (Lina) Holmes and Craig (Renae) Holmes; eight grandchildren: Nathan, Joshua, Jonah, Corinne, Sage, Melissa, Tylon and Maximus; his sister Elizabeth Ostrander and sister-in-law Becky (Bob) Reiter.
He has been called home by our Lord and Saviour for a blessed reunion with Caroline, his dear wife of sixty years, his son Hal Ray, his parents, brother Gerald, and sisters & brothers-in-law.
Corliss was born on the family farm near Woodhull, Illinois, the son of Harold and Frances Holmes. He met the love of his life Caroline while working at a church summer camp in Wisconsin. She was the camp nurse, and he was the camp “roustabout”. They married in 1955. He attended Augustana College and Seminary in Rock Island, Illinois. He was ordained as a Pastor of the Augustana Lutheran Church in 1958 and went on to serve congregations of Emmanuel, Meeting Creek and Sharon, Clive, Alberta (1958-1961), at Immanuel in New Westminster, BC (1961-1967) and at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Calgary, from 1967 until retiring in Calgary in 1994.
Dad always had a smile and a great sense of humour. He could easily start up a conversation with anyone and had a genuine interest in what you had to say. He was an “at home” family guy that loved spending time with grandchildren. He missed his sweet Caroline tremendously, who we lost to cancer seven years ago.
A Funeral Service will be held at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Cross, (10620 Elbow Drive SW), on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Laura Holck officiating. For those unable to attend, a live stream is available at www.churchofthecross.ca
Memorial gifts may be made to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Cross, Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR).
