It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Danny Donison, who left us suddenly on Saturday, March 12, 2016. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by us, Lori and Ridge, Lisa and Rene (Bjornson), and the light of his life, his granddaughters Alyssa and Sarah. A Funeral Service will be held at Westview Baptist Church, 1313 Ranchlands Way NW, Calgary, on Monday, March 21, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Dad was predeceased by our precious Mother, Marilyn, in 2011. You are together again Mom and Dad—love reunited. Thank you for being amazing parents and for giving us all the love and guidance you did while we were growing up and into our adult years. To think you would always be with us was naïve, but to know you are gone is unfathomable. We will always love you Daddy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to The Salvation Army at www.salvationarmy.ca, PO Box 8200, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4W5. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
Danny was born August 12, 1932 in Avonlea, Saskatchewan to Mary (nee Yorga) and Sebastian Donison. He was the 8th of 12 children.
Danny went to Crystal Hill country school for eight years before he moved to Regina where he attended Balfour Technical School and spent most of his working career with the Regina Fire Department, retiring in 1988 after 30 years of service.
Danny met the love of his life, Marilyn Jean Sedman on September 10, 1958 through mutual friends. They were engaged September 10, 1959 and married September 10, 1960. Marilyn and Danny were blessed with two daughters, Lori and Lisa.
Along with his brothers Lee and Butch, Danny was an avid wrestler. He began wrestling at the YMCA in 1950 and by 1952 he won his first Provincial Championship title. He retired from wrestling in 1969 after placing in over 12 Provincial Championships in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and placing first at the Canadian Championships in 1955 and 1956 and second in 1957. In 1982 Danny was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame along with brothers Lee and Butch, honored for their outstanding achievements in wrestling and boxing.
Danny loved to fix things. Having grown up in times when you cherished everything you had, and didn't throw anything away, he learned to fix everything. He had a special love for watches and clocks, and people would come from all around to bring theirs for him to fix. He was exceptionally good at it, which is nothing if not a testament to to his abiding patience.
Marilyn and Danny moved to Calgary in 2003, to be close to their daughters who had both relocated there. Within a few years their two grandchildren Alyssa and Sarah were born. His granddaughters were the light of his life, and in turn they adored him. Danny was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a hardworking, intelligent, kind and gentle man who was a good friend and devoted to his family until the end. He will be sorely missed, and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Danny is predeceased by his parents and 7 of his siblings, and his loving wife who passed away in December 2011. Life without Marilyn was difficult for Danny—he missed her everyday. Now they are reunited and he is sad no more. We love you Dad and Grandpa. Thank you for all the years of joy and wonderful memories. Until we meet again...Love always,
