She was born in Calgary, AB on July 5, 1927 to parents Mary and Byron Boyd, who both predeceased her. Daphne spent all her years living in Calgary and enjoyed its natural beauty. Daphne travelled extensively globally and was fascinated with different cultures and diversity. She kept a collection of recordings of all her trips and was always planning her next adventure.
Daphne completed her studies at McGill University where she majored as a librarian. She spent all her working years as a professional librarian, which was her pride and joy. Daphne received the prestigious long service award from the city of Calgary for her outstanding work as a Librarian.
Daphne was an avid reader and story teller. She surrounded herself with volumes of books from various disciplines and would bury herself in reading and researching topics of interest to her. Daphne was also a writer and kept in touch by writing long letters to her cousins and her friends through her final days. Keeping in touch with friends and family was very important to her.
Daphne had a heart for people, and sponsored many children in the countries she had visited and kept in touch with them over the years. She was a member of the St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, where her mother and grandmother attended and later the St. Mark and St. Phillip’s Anglican Church in Calgary. Her favorite spot for reflection was Mount St. Francis in Cochrane, AB, and she attended retreats there twice per year for over forty years.
Daphne was sophisticated in her taste and mannerism. So on Friday, March 2, after her meal, she requested to watch the frozen Bow River for a little while, and then listen to music. This was granted and she sang with the accordion enjoying her last piece, and in Daphne’s fine style, went to sleep. Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me!
She will be sadly missed by goddaughter Margaret Greene, numerous cousins across Canada and England, and all of her many friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, 1121 – 14 Ave SW, Calgary, AB, on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 1:30 p.m.
