David Check passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the age of 77 years in Calgary, Alberta, following a courageous battle to overcome the many difficulties of a second stroke.
He fought hard throughout his journey and faced it bravely and with a certain amount of humour. We had a few laughs at various times together, and there was always an optimistic hope that he could recover somewhat, as he had such an impressive recovery from his first stroke 11 years ago.
We wish to express our appreciation to the nurses, aids and doctors at both the Foothills Hospital and South Health Campus (Hospital), and the staff at the nursing homes who treated Dave with such high respect and wonderful care. A special thank-you to nurse Angela and her team of women at the South Health Campus (Hospital) who tenderly prepared Dave for his final moments. Our heart goes out to you.
Who was Dave? He was our big brother and we love him dearly.
He received his BA in Economics from the University of Alberta and spent most of his life in sales.
Dave was very skilled and knowledgeable in construction and was always ready to lend a hand in the family renovation projects (garage, basement, deck, cottage building, and an impressive 2nd storey addition to a bungalow). His usual response to a request for help was: “I was waiting for you to ask!” In addition to all that, he didn’t hesitate to help with the flood cleanout back in 2013 for complete strangers.
He was a good man, and without a doubt, we are certain that he was welcomed with open arms as he passed over the threshold into his new life.
Dave is survived by three siblings: sister Roxanne Johnson (Cliff) and brothers James Check (Sharon) and Daniel Check (Donna), as well as their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by our father’s youngest siblings: Val Brown and Bernice Selander. We have had a large family of cousins (and their families) on both our father’s and our mother’s side and have already lost a few of them. We cherish the ones that remain.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday May 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Fosters Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary. Interment to follow at Queens Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca).
