Della Mae Selinger passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary, Alberta on October 6th, 2025, at the age of 81 years. She will be dearly missed by everyone she touched over the years…. her friends and her family.
Della was born in Calgary to Gordon and May Habermehl on November 23, 1943. She grew up in Bowness and worked for the City of Calgary where she stumbled on the love of her life, Philipp Selinger; they would marry in 1963.
Della worked in the data centers of a few banks and ended her working career in retail for Sears and Royal Doulton. Della loved her job at Royal Doulton; she had a passion for china quality, beauty and patterns. This led to Della acquiring lots of china and figurines; they brought her a lot of JOY. This LOVE for china is what led to her personal selection for her journey’s end.
Della was a vibrant, engaging and passionate woman who courageously conquered all challenges in her life. She was curious, detailed, and constantly researched and absorbed information. This curiosity helped her be stronger and clearer about what she was navigating through.
Della loved her hobbies of sewing, crocheting, quilting, reading, puzzling for hours and most of all, travel. Della LOVED the motor home trips to Mesa, Arizona. She enjoyed the organization and preparation for each of those trips and each of those new adventures.
Della was a very social person, she always wanted to be around people and the bigger the group the better. She was a part of sewing groups, social groups and the CWL. She loved hosting big family dinners, embracing all the conversations and connection and living life to the fullest. She was in her element during these times.
Della will be missed by her husband of 63 years, Philipp; her son Edward; her daughter-in-law Sherry; her daughter Roseann (and her son Gordon Cisecky (Janelle)); her son David (Rhonda and their son Nathaniel and daughter Lindsay); her daughter Frances Ericson (Tom); and her daughter Annette Thon (Ken). She will be sadly missed by her wonderful extended family: Kari Ashlee (Mark and their son Jack and daughter Paige); Blake Thon (Rofel and their daughter Callie); Brittany Thon (and her son Knox and daughter Skye).
Della is also survived by her brother Jim Habermehl (Terry and their daughters Karen and Donna); her sister Stella Sanderman (son Shane and daughter Tammy); her sister-in-law Anna Iwaskow (and her son Greg and his family), as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
Della is predeceased by her parents Gordon and May, brother Raymond (Judy), brother-in-law Earl (Stella), and her son Michael on October 30, 2023.
A private Memorial Service was held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church.
