She was predeceased by her parents, John Phillip and Katherine Emma Huber; brothers Gordon and Ron; sisters Gerry and Cathy; and daughter Sherry. Dot will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Kori, son-in-law Cleave; grandchildren Jacey and Wyatt; sisters Betty and Darlene; as well as many friends.
Born in Chatham ON, Dot was the second child of seven born to Kay and Phil Huber. Growing up she was raised in Regina SK. After her marriage failed, she moved to Calgary with her family and first daughter, Sherry. In Calgary, she held several jobs – all at the same time. She did secretarial work for Charles E. Frost, she pumped gas at her father’s service station, worked weekends as a hostess at Harris Skyroom (nightclub), and worked as a model for live television, the Palliser Hotel, and the Jubilee Auditorium. While working for Barbara Watts, the owner of Savoir Faire modeling school, she met Barbara’s brother Walter (Duke) Shamon. They married in June 1959 and moved to Revelstoke. Kori was born the following May. Duke was killed in a car accident in Golden B.C. in 1965, and Dot moved to Vancouver with her girls after being offered a job managing a cosmetic line, Beauty Seal products. After two and a half years, she came back to Calgary where she built her home in Huntington Hills in March 1967. She raised her girls as a single mother and put them through dance lessons, competitions, and recitals. She worked many years as an antique dealer, and afterwards became a car dealer so she could remain at home for Sherry and Kori. She loved all animals and enjoyed sports, especially bowling, baseball and basketball.
Sadly, Sherry passed away in September 2006 of cancer. Dot’s sister Darlene flew in from Vancouver to help her take care of Sherry, and stayed by her side for many months until the cancer finally took her life. Dot often spoke of how grateful she is to Darlene and Betty for their love and assistance during that difficult time.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Calgary at a later date.
